Stonehouse Ditch Roundabout, Link Road and North Park Access

Location: Purfleet, Essex

Completion Date: August 2024

ISC are delighted to have completed work at the CLdN London Port! Our team at ISC was responsible for delivering a new roundabout, access road, and security complex under a JCT Design and Build contract.

This complex two-year project, which also included new freight access gates, gatehouses, an automated camera system for checking the condition of trailers, and the improvement of access roads within the terminal, will significantly improve customer access to the port and deliver on commitments with the local authority to divert terminal traffic away from residential areas, whilst enabling CLdN to increase capacity at the port.

The scope of works for ISC included site clearance, earthworks, ground improvement through the use of PVDs and surcharging, drainage, ducting, diversion of services and utilities, full road construction, fencing and vehicle restraint systems.

One of the key challenges was the delivery of the complex S278 works, which required engagement with multiple stakeholders and a comprehensive Traffic Management and Work Phasing Plan. Key stakeholders included Thurrock Council, HS1, Network Rail, Statutory Authorities and the local community.

One constraint was the construction of the northern arm of the roundabout, directly beneath the HS1 viaduct. Incredible attention to detail was required when excavating and backfilling around the viaduct structure. Vibration and movement monitoring was carried out to ensure that we worked within the monitoring parameters.

Works were completed with no delays throughout the project to the terminal’s operations, and minimal disruption to the local road network, allowing the terminal to open as planned.

Darren Quinton, Managing Director of ISC, shared his thoughts on the project: “We are immensely proud of the role ISC has played in this development for the London Port. This project shows our team’s technical expertise and our commitment to improving regional infrastructure. The new access route will significantly enhance traffic management and support CLdN’s operational goals, reflecting our dedication to excellence in every aspect of our work.”
