We are delighted to welcome Alastair McDermid to the ISC team as Stabilisation Technical Director.

Better known as Al, he has built an impressive career in soil stabilisation across the UK and internationally. His expertise and hands-on approach will be instrumental in strengthening our capabilities as we continue to expand our stabilisation operations.

Al’s journey into the construction industry came via a different ‘root’, where he started work in the forestry sector. Extracting timber from woods required good haul roads and aggregate wasn’t always easy to get in. So, an alternative was needed and soil stabilisation was the answer!

Since this introduction to the process in the very early 90’s, Al has gone on to build an impressive portfolio of projects across the UK and Down Under. With a hands-on approach, Al has performed every task within the stabilisation process, from manually spreading powders to operating specialist plant machinery and overseeing major projects in management and directorship roles.

His vast experience includes delivering high-profile projects, and one achievement he takes particular pride in is his involvement in the London 2012 Olympic Games. Reflecting on the project, Al shares, “Being part of the London 2012 Olympics was a special moment. It’s one of those projects that I still talk about today. I’ve definitely bored my kids with the stories over the years!”

Al has been involved in stabilisation projects of all scales, covering commercial, industrial, retail developments, housing schemes, roads, rail, and airport infrastructure.

Having worked with members of the GRS and ISC teams in the past, Al saw this as a natural fit for the next chapter in his career. “I have known and worked on projects with members of the GRS/ISC team over the years, so coming to work with them was a straightforward decision to make. With our soil stabilisation business developing quickly, I’m excited to share my experiences and knowledge to help build on the growing successes so far.”

Beyond work, Al enjoys calming walks in the countryside with his dog. He’s also an avid golfer (though not with the dog!) and enjoys watching rugby and football.

We are thrilled to have Al on board and look forward to the expertise and leadership he brings to the team.
